Manchester United is ‘desperate’ to sign Ruben Neves after the midfielder’s key role in Wolves’ victory at Old Trafford.
Ralf Rangnick wants to buy a midfielder in the January transfer window and is considering Neves, who has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League after four and a half years at Molineux.
According to The Sun, Manchester United considered a move for the Portugal international last summer and will rekindle their interest this month, with Wolves expected to seek a fee in excess of £40 million for Neves.
Rangnick wants an upgrade on his present alternatives, which include Fred and Scott McTominay, after the 24-year-old controlled the midfield during Wolves’ 1-0 win at Manchester United on January 3.
Donny van de Beek and Paul Pogba’s futures are also in doubt, so Neves – who drew interest from Arsenal last summer and has two years left on his current contract – might be the ideal replacement.
When he was at Porto, Neves became the Champions League’s youngest ever captain, and he is allegedly eager to challenge himself again among Europe’s top.
But as things stand, United has a bloated squad and will be looking to trim the squad before signing new players. The January transfer window will be a successful one for United if they let go at least five or six unwanted players.
