Manchester United treble-winning striker Dwight Yorke has slammed the critics and pundits that have been criticizing Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence in the squad.
After Man United’s defeat against Leicester City, Gary Neville named five players who were scrappy against the Foxes. One of those names was Cristiano Ronaldo, whose footwork and team contribution was questioned by Gary Neville.
The legendary Man United striker Dwight Yorke has hit back on such claims regarding the world’s best player by describing them as ‘nonsense’.
While having a conversation with talkSPORT, Yorke said:
“I think that is a load of nonsense, in my opinion. You have a world-class player. You play your best players, it is as simple as that. Players know exactly what those types of players bring to the table and other the players in that team do specific things to complement the attacking players.”
“For people to start saying he brings unbalance to United… yes, he probably isn’t as dynamic and whatever else he is, but Cristiano Ronaldo, in any team in the world, makes you a better team.”
“Players should get used to that and I really think when you look at United’s attacking players and the quality that they possess, they have one of the best squads in the country and, unfortunately, at this point in time, there is a question mark as to why United are not producing the goods as they should be at this present time.”
Ronaldo although didn’t contribute much against Leicester City, but was not the only person at fault. Not to forget, he was the man who saved us against West Ham, Newcastle United, and Villarreal. His goals were important and to point it all on him, makes no sense.
The main issue that has to be rather resolved is the consistency of the playing XI. Solskjaer has mostly changed formations pretty quickly and didn’t give much chance for his top players to create a rapport with their teammates.
Consistency and togetherness are the keys and if players like Cristiano Ronaldo are made to sit on the bench rather than playing them, it creates a loss of bonding. As Sir Alex Ferguson said, you should start your best players and this will indeed help the team to understand each other well.
The same concept is used by Manchester City and Liverpool, they keep their starting XI constant, just minor changes here and there. It’s high time that Solskjaer should start implementing this similar concept in his tactical setup.
