A first half strike from wing-back Renan Lodi gave Atletico the win at Old Trafford in the midweek contest to send Manchester United out of the Champions League.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
The home side enjoyed chances through on goal thick and fast in the opening stages of the contest with Anthony Elanga at the forefront.
Elanga tested Atletico’s stopper Jan Oblak twice in quick succession with the second effort crashing against the woodwork before Atletico too amped up their displays going forward.
The Spanish champions thought they had the lead through Joao Felix in the 33rd minute before the goal was chalked off due to offside.
Renan Lodi, however, was unmarked to head home in the 41st minute to make it 1-0 for his side even though the United players protested against a foul on Elanga by Gimenez in the build-up to the goal.
Both teams looked to find the back of the net when the second period got underway with Elanga once again on target only for his shot to beat the far post.
Gimenez was on target from a De Paul corner as Atletico dangerman Felix attempted to double his side’s lead with a cheeky chip over De Gea to no avail.
Changes off the bench, which brought on the likes of Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata, were unable to turn the back in United’s favour as the Red Devils were sent crashing out of the competition.
