Both teams enjoyed early chances through on goal but the goalkeepers stood tall to keep the scoreline level as Jadon Sancho proved to be a threat up top for the hosts.

The England international finally found the back of the net for United’s hard-earned opener with Sancho teed up by Rashford to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

Stuart Armstrong went close twice for the visitors before the break and the second effort had David de Gea called into action to make a good save.

A weak start to the second period allowed Southampton to get a foot back into the game with forward Che Adams netting the leveller.

Ralf Ragnick’s men could have gone ahead just minutes later when a Luke Shaw delivery into the box found Harry Maguire whose header was cleared off the line by Forster.

Chances came either side of the pitch and a Ronaldo strike in the 72nd minute had VAR chalking it off with United on the hunt for the elusive second goal which never came with the game finishing in a stalemate.
