Manchester United’s Three All-Time Most Expensive Signings

Manchester United FC are one of the biggest and one of the richest clubs in the world of football. The Red Devils have always loved to make bold and big-money signings to reach their goals and fulfil their ambitions. United have broken the British record several times and have also broken the world record for transfer fees a few times.

Let us now have a look at the most expensive signings Manchester United have ever made, according to transfer fees.

#3 ROMELU LUKAKU –

Jose Mourinho has always preferred a robust striker and following the injury to Ibrahimovic, Mourinho was keen on signing Lukaku. The Belgian striker was signed from Everton sighting his great record in a mediocre team, in the summer of 2017. Lukaku was signed for a reported fee of £75m as Mourinho made him United’s No.9 instantly.

Lukaku enjoyed his first season at United, starting from where he left off at Everton and scored in his debut. The centre-forward scored a total of 27 goals and provided nine assists in just 51 games in his first season. Lukaku earned great plaudits because of his goalscoring attributes which helped United get a second-place finish in the Premier League.

But his second season at Old Trafford, Lukaku struggled for goals and with former boss, Mourinho, sacked Lukaku found himself on the bench. That season he managed only 15 goals in 45 games and saw a change in his position on the pitch. The next summer Lukaku was sold to Inter Milan where he has enjoyed life under Antonio Conte.

#2 HARRY MAGUIRE –

Harry Maguire was signed by Manchester United at the beginning of this season from Leicester City. Sighting United’s defensive woes last season, the Red Devils broke their banks to get Maguire making him the worlds most expensive defender. Manchester United reportedly paid £80m to Leicester City in the summer of 2019 to secure the services of their eventual club captain.

Maguire has lived up to what was expected of him at United and has silenced most of his critics with his performances. The Englishman has made United one of the stoutest defences in the world, with the least clean-sheets in Europe. The Red Devils stood as the third-least goal-conceding side in the Premier League last season and Maguire played every minute of the Premier League.

Maguire has also been named as United’s captain, in his first season at the club and has shown great leadership. This season, Harry Maguire has played more minutes than anyone in the world and is still going strong.

#1 PAUL POGBA –

Paul Pogba was a Manchester United academy graduate, but left for Juventus in 2012, in search of game-time and new possibilities. The mercurial Frenchman returned to Old Trafford after shining and tearing it apart in the Italian Serie-A. Pogba signed for the Red Devils again in 2016 for a world record transfer fee of £89.3m and that fee remains the highest-paid by a British club.

Pogba has been at the centre of a lot of criticism though, despite good performances in the United shirt. Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has constantly talked about talking his client to Real Madrid and the United faithful haven’t liked it. But Pogba has almost always performed on the pitch and has put his critics aside.

Lately, Pogba has been reportedly very happy at United and is also ready to commit his future at Old Trafford. United are expected to open contract talks with Raiola when the Europa League ends. Once he signs a new contract he will surely win over his biggest critics as well.
