Manchester United star centre-back Lisandro Martinez has responded to the remarks made about his small stature.
The former Ajax defender was acquired by the Red Devils in the summer for £55.3 million. Many questioned if the centre-back, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, could handle the brutality of the Premier League.
Martinez, one of the additions of the summer, has, nevertheless, silenced his critics with his fantastic performances throughout the entire season. As reported by the Telegraph, the World Cup winner was asked about the comments made on his stature and he said:
“I can’t control that [what people say], you know – it’s just an opinion. I understand when people say that – they show me who they are, you know? It’s not my problem.”
“I’m really happy, the people are happy with me as well. That’s the most important thing. In the beginning, in Argentina, it was the same. “
“But it’s normal because, in football, it’s not normal to play as a centre-back with my height. It’s not easy as well, you know – you have to work very hard.”
“You have to be very clever on the pitch, you have to be sharp in every situation but if you’re smart you can win the duels.”
The United supporters’ favourite centre-back, known as “The Butcher,” is more than just your average defender. He possesses amazing ball-handling skills and the ability to play line-breaking passes from the back.
He is essential to Erik ten Hag’s side because of his versatile passing style. United’s inability to play from the back is obvious when he isn’t on the field.
Martinez arrived at Old Trafford with the reputation of an aggressive defender, which is typical of Argentine defenders.
