Manchester United confirm the signing of Jonny Evans on a one-year contract

As revealed by the club’s official website, Manchester United have officially confirmed the permanent signing of Jonny Evans, who has inked a one-year contract with the club until June 2024.

The 35-year-old defender originally emerged from the United academy and accumulated 198 appearances during his initial stint with the Red Devils.

Evans departed Old Trafford in 2015, moving to West Bromwich Albion, and later joined Leicester City three years afterwards.

Following his time with the Foxes, Evans returned to train with Man United and was extended a short-term contract to participate in pre-season matches.

United’s closure of the summer transfer window is marred by concerns. Allowing Evans to depart in 2015 was viewed as a mistake, and re-signing him on a one-year contract now is considered an even bigger error.

The Northern Ireland international is past his prime and doesn’t align with the style of football preferred by Ten Hag, who emphasizes a high defensive line and values quick and proactive center-backs.

Evans may bring experience to the squad, but he lacks the necessary pace and urgency typically seen in top-tier centre-backs.

However, there is hope that his wisdom and guidance can inspire a squad that has yet to secure the Premier League title.

Despite this, United have been active in the recent days of the transfer window, securing the services of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce and announcing the loan signing of Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham.
