Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was a target for Manchester United this summer, but they ultimately opted against signing him due to interest in Frenkie de Jong.
According to a story in The Telegraph, United considered bringing the Brazilian player from Aston Villa back to Manchester.
The 24-year-old started his English career at Manchester City before joining Villa in the summer of 2019 for about £15 million. The Brazilian midfielder is now allegedly worth about £50 million to the West Midlands team.
Newcastle United reportedly had a £30 million bid for Luiz rejected, and United reportedly made the decision to move on instead of making a high bid.
Erik ten Hag still appears to have his sights set on Frenkie de Jong, and there is still a good potential that they will get together But it’s evident that Ten Hag isn’t putting all of his eggs in one basket. The Telegraph claims that United was interested in the 24-year-old but Ten Hag ultimately chose to target players that would fit his system of play.
This summer, there are much better players available, including De Jong and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. We already think that by signing Adrien Rabiot, considering the Frenchman’s poor record, Ten Hag may be on the verge of making a mistake.
If Ten Hag is sincere about moving United forward, he should sign De Jong or Milinkovic-Savic. Another choice might be Konrad Laimer or possibly one of the brilliant young stars like Jean Onana or Kouadio Koné. Both Rabiot and Luiz might be criticized for not being the right choice at United.
