The Red Devils produced one of the finest performances at Old Trafford in the recent past as they hammered their fierce rivals Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
It was a relatively tough fixture on the outside but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men made easy work of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea who suffered quite a harsh reality check. Lampard’s first competitive game in charge came in a hostile environment at Old Trafford and the youngest manager in the League got a bitter taste against Manchester United.
Marcus Rashford gave United an early lead from the penalty spot just 18 minutes into the game after Kurt Zouma’s foul on the Englishman. The 21-year-old then stepped up to give United the advantage with a powerful finish into the side netting.
Chelsea did have their chances in the first half but in the second period, a 95-second spell took the game away from the Londoners. Anthony Martial doubled United’s lead in the 65th minute after tucking home from Andreas Pereira’s cross on the right and Rashford doubled his tally on the night with lovely control and finish from Paul Pogba’s pass over the Chelsea defense.
Daniel James came on as a substitute in the second half and got his first goal as a Manchester United player when he made it 4-0 and pretty much game over with only nine minutes before the full-time whistle.
Manchester United began their Premier League campaign with a crucial three points and all of their new signings looked comfortable playing under the new manager and the new fans. United’s next test in the Premier League is against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.
