According to ESPN, Manchester United has shortlisted three transfer targets that it wants to sign in the summer transfer window.
Dutch striker Wout Weghorst emerged as a surprise transfer target for Erik ten Hag, and United are currently negotiating a deal to sign him until the end of the current season. Weghorst, a native of the same country as the United manager, is currently on loan to Turkish club Besiktas.
This news comes after Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford in November after making a surprise transfer to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr. Following a shocking interview with Piers Morgan, the Portuguese superstar terminated his contract with United.
After Ronaldo left, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were the only attackers left in the squad. The Red Devils are hoping to strengthen their attacking unit in January. Any loan agreement made in January is unlikely to last past the summer, when the club hopes to spend big on a long-term replacement.
Three players stand out on United’s wish list as they prioritise bringing in a striker during the summer transfer window. On the list are Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and RB Leipzig striker.
The presence of England captain and Tottenham striker Harry Kane will garner the most attention for United’s summer ambitions. The club is aware that the 29-year-old’s contract in north London expires in the summer of 2024. He still didn’t sign a new contract with Spurs.
The English star has spent his entire career with Spurs, with the exception of a few loan stints earlier in his career, and this is his final opportunity to move. With no big trophy in his cabinet, the prolific goal scorer may think about leaving.
Kane was open to a summer transfer to Manchester City in 2021, with Pep Guardiola’s team eager to seal a deal. However, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy stated that the star was not for sale.
Rashford and Martial are the only strikers in the squad, and the club needs to find more options in that particular position.
