According to a report by the Athletic, Manchester United is considering a surprise approach for Bologna attacker Marko Arnautovic.
This summer, the Red Devils are eager to sign a new striker, and they have recently been connected to Benjamin Sesko of Red Bull Salzburg.
With a price tag of £45 million, the 19-year-old won’t be cheap, so it seems the club is looking at more affordable options.
They have reportedly made an unexpected move for Arnautovic, who scored 15 goals in his rookie season with Bologna last year.
The idea of playing in the Premier League again, where the Austrian spent six seasons with Stoke City and West Ham United, has the player “fascinated.”
A transfer, though, doesn’t seem possible at the time because Bologna doesn’t want to lose his services.
Over the course of the transfer window, United have been linked with a number of high-profile players, but the links with Arnautovic are unquestionably a huge shock.
With 184 games, the 33-year-old has extensive Premier League experience. He scored 10 goals in each of his final two seasons with West Ham and 11 goals in his final season.
He might serve as United’s emergency signing as he may fill Edinson Cavani’s shoes. Arnautovic might be viewed as the team’s third-choice striker this season with Anthony Martial back in the mix following a strong preseason campaign.
Bologna would need to be convinced to accept a raise from their present £66,000 weekly salary if Erik ten Hag wants him, but United shouldn’t have any problems doing so.
He was acquired by the Serie A team from Shanghai Port last summer for £2.7 million. With Arnautovic serving as their primary striker, they may demand a high price.
