According to The Telegraph, Manchester United will have a big decision in their hands whether to hand a new contract to senior goalkeeper David de Gea amid uncertainty over his future.
The Red Devils paid out £384.2 million in wages in the 2021-22 season and they would be careful of spending more as they have already suffered a net loss of around £115.5million this year.
Considering this, De Gea is the second highest-paid player in the current United squad, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spanish goalkeeper has nine months left on his current contract and he will be 32 years old soon.
The club still has the option to extend his contract for one more year, but they would then need to pay his wages for another year. United could also target another new keeper in the summer transfer window to replace the Spaniard and allow him to leave.
Currently, the manager has given no indication regarding the player’s future but may be forced to take a decision soon. If the club agrees to let him leave for free, then there would be a place for a new goalkeeper to join them.
Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and recently, Everton’s Jordan Pickford have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Last summer, Yann Sommer was also targeted by the Red Devils but they preferred to sign second-choice keeper Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United.
With Dean Henderson on loan and Tom Heaton turning 37 next year, United will need to act quickly and make a wise decision before De Gea’s contract expires.
