Manchester United have gained ground in attempts to land Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji with the Swiss centre-back rebuffing extended terms with the Bundesliga outfit.
The Red Devils are suggested to be in the transfer market for defensive reinforcements to shore up an ailing backline despite the much-hyped arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid last summer.

Akanji is one name who has emerged on the radar at Old Trafford and with the 26-year-old central defender turning down Dortmund’s offer to tie him to a long-term deal, United could be set to intensify their efforts to land his signature.
According to claims from SPORT1’s Patrick Berger, Akanji’s future in the Dortmund shirt beyond the summer remains up in the air and the Germans would be forced to cash in on him rather than lose the defender on a free transfer in 2023.
Dortmund are rumoured to be looking for a £25.3 million asking price for Akanji with United unlikely to be disappointed at forking an amount in that region to sign a highly-rated player.
