Manchester United get Raphael Varane injury boost

Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane sustained an injury during Sunday’s Manchester derby, but his time on the sidelines is expected to be brief.

Local rival City dismantled United by a 6-3 scoreline at the Etihad, and Varane’s abrupt departure in the first half after twisting his ankle delivered United a further devastating blow.

Erik ten Hag’s first-choice centre-back partnership this season has been Varane and new summer signing Lisandro Martinez, who have won their first five matches together and recorded three clean sheets.

Many Red Devils supporters have been concerned about how the French defender’s absence may affect their performance, but there is some good news for them.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, a scan of Varane’s foot showed no ligament damage, and although no recovery period has been specified, it is not believed to be a long-term injury as earlier feared.

With club captain Harry Maguire now sidelined with a hamstring injury and Axel Tuanzebe being a long-term absentee, Ten Hag will be greatly relieved by this news.

That only leaves Martinez and Victor Lindelof left for United after Varane was replaced after the derby loss. The two centre-backs will most likely start for the Red Devils in their next match against Omonia on Thursday.
