Manchester United hoping to sign promising Monaco striker in the upcoming transfer window

Manchester United FC are looking to sign Monaco ace Pietro Pellegri, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed to be the one who has reignited the interest for the teenager, whom former Manchester United FC manager Jose Mourinho had tried to sign during his tenure at the Premier League club.

Pellegri was a target for Manchester United FC in 2018, with his performances at Italian club Genoa FC having caught the eye of Jose Mourinho. However, despite extensive talks between the Red Devils and Genoa FC, Pellegri did not end up moving to Old Trafford. Instead, he felt that his development could be aided further by joining Ligue 1 giants Monaco. He cost the French club a fee in the region of £21m, which made him the second most expensive 16-year-old of all time.

Despite the excitement surrounding his move to Monaco, Pellegri has not been able to replicate his previous performances at the French club. Now 19 years old, the player is yet to become a regular starter for the team. Frequent injuries have marred his progress at Monaco with the player continually struggling with fitness issues. This has led to the Italian striker appearing only six times for Monaco in competitive appearances and managing to score just one goal during his time on the pitch. However, the Ligue 1 club still harbor high hopes from the young striker in the future.

Despite his injury-ridden time at Monaco, Manchester United FC are ready to take upon the gamble involved in signing him. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring Pellegri to Old Trafford and add him to the variety of attacking options he already has on his disposal including Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Anthony Martial.

Moreover, present United loanee Odion Ighalo’s term is ending, and there is uncertainty surrounding his future stay at the club. In the wake of this, Solskjaer is looking to sign another promising striker to bolster the squad depth for the Red Devils, as they look towards challenging for the Premier League title in the coming seasons.
