Manchester United are apparently willing to pay Benfica’s £61 million fee asking price for Joao Neves, who is seen as a replacement for Casemiro.
The former Real Madrid star had a promising debut season at Old Trafford, having joined the team from the Spanish capital in the summer of 2022.
He played in 51 matches during the 2022-23 season and contributed with seven goals and seven assists. Casemiro has been a consistent presence in United’s lineup this season, starting eight out of nine Premier League matches.
However, his performances have faced criticism, raising doubts about his role in Erik ten Hag’s team. Recent reports suggest that the 31-year-old is unhappy at United and regrets leaving Madrid after a nine-year stint.
Despite having a long-term contract with the Premier League club, there is now uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford.
According to El Nacional, Man United have identified Benfica starlet Neves as a potential replacement for the Brazilian international.
The report indicates that the Red Devils are prepared to meet the Portuguese club’s €70 million (£61 million) valuation for the young midfielder.
Neves, who came up through Benfica’s youth system, had his senior debut in a 3-0 loss to Braga in January. Since then, the teenager has made 32 competitive appearances for the club, contributing with one goal and two assists.

His impressive performances caught the attention of Portugal’s national team coach, Roberto Martinez, who gave the midfielder his debut in the recent 5-0 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Neves has played in all 12 matches for Benfica this season and is expected to be in the starting lineup for the Champions League match against Real Sociedad on Tuesday.
