Manchester United interested in signing Brentford left-back Aaron Hickey

As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United are showing interest in signing Brentford left-back Aaron Hickey this summer.

However, Brentford are currently not willing to part ways with the 21-year-old Scottish player and has placed a £50 million price tag on him.

Hickey has made significant progress in his career under the guidance of manager Thomas Frank, following his move from Bologna.

Considering that Rico Henry appears to be sidelined for the remainder of the season, it’s highly likely that Hickey will assume the role of the starting left-back for Frank’s team, potentially further increasing his market value.

United, as well as Liverpool and Arsenal, have expressed interest in the defender. However, it appears unlikely that Brentford would be willing to part with the player, especially considering he has earned 11 caps for the Scottish national team.

The reason behind United potentially paying £50 million for a left-back remains unclear, but it’s worth noting that the defender possesses significant quality.

Nevertheless, it’s worth considering that the defender is versatile and can play on both the left and right flanks. This flexibility could lead United to consider targeting Hickey as a right-back rather than a left-back.

Man United are currently facing a situation where their primary right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, is sidelined due to a hamstring injury, and his recovery could take around two months.

In his absence, Diogo Dalot has made a case for himself as the leading choice for the position at United in recent weeks.

The need for a new right-back, one who excels both defensively and offensively, seems evident since both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka have their own individual weaknesses in their game.

While Hickey could potentially be a valuable option for the Red Devils, the £50 million price tag attached to him may lead the club to explore more cost-effective alternatives for this position.
