Manchester United will compete with Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Manchester City in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic this summer.
Since Chelsea wants to reduce the size of their squad, they are hesitant to extend the 29-year-old’s contract, which has 12 months left on it.
As per the Manchester Evening News, United reportedly wants to lure Kovacic to Old Trafford in order to strengthen their midfield.
In 2018, Kovacic transferred from Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge, where he has helped the Blues win the Champions League, Europa League, and Club World Cup.
The Croatian star frequently makes advancing runs while controlling the game from a deep position. He can dribble well and distribute the ball quickly.
In the event that Casemiro is not available, he can step in to play the number six position. Having said that, he lacks the tactical discipline necessary for that position and is not a natural deep-lying playmaker.
Kovacic is a talented ball-carrying midfielder, but his attacking contributions is an issue. He has just four goals and 13 assists in almost 140 Premier League games for Chelsea.
United must look for midfielders who can greatly enhance their squad. The signing of Jude Bellingham or Declan Rice should be their first priority.
If Kovacic is available cheaply, signing him might be a wise choice. He shouldn’t be the top candidate on United’s transfer shortlist.
The Red Devils must sign players who can completely change their team if they wish to close the gap on Manchester City.
