According to The Mirror, Manchester United has introduced a £200,000 weekly wage limit to stop players from earning “much more” than their teammates. This has been dubbed “The Ronaldo Rule’.
The choice was made after Cristiano Ronaldo, who was making £500,000 a week, left the club after causing problems both behind closed doors and in the media.
Erik ten Hag and chief executive Richard Arnold have decided to introduce a wage restriction as the next step in preventing a “culture of dressing-room jealousy.”
The new rule is expected to have an influence on a number of players, with goalkeeper David de Gea being the first to feel its effects right away. The goalkeeper will be the first to be affected because the Spaniard makes £375,000 a week.
Senior athletes earning between £180,000 and £200,000 per week, like Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, and now Fernandes, suffer financially if they do not make the Champions League. Having more players paid at that level is the goal rather than spending £500,000 a week on a few superstar players.
The deal will have a significant impact on Marcus Rashford because other European teams are keeping an eye on the England international.
His current contract will end in 2024 after United decided to exercise a one-year contract extension. Though Paris Saint-Germain is eager to hire him, there are no guarantees that he will sign a new contract.
