Manchester United keeping tabs on Lille striker Jonathan David

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Lille striker Jonathan David as they want to strengthen their attacking unit this January.

The 22-year-old striker was rumoured to be leaving his French club over the summer, but he preferred to stay for more experience.

Although David still has three more years left on his Lille deal, there is yet more rumour regarding his future ahead of the January transfer market.

The Canadian international has had a strong season at the club level, making 14 appearances in Ligue 1 while tallying nine goals and three assists. Meanwhile, since joining Les Dogues from Gent in August 2020, he has now scored 41 goals and recorded eight assists in 110 appearances.

Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal are also keeping a close eye on his status ahead of the World Cup. According to the report, United might try to sign him in January or during the summer transfer window the following year. The forward is reportedly worth at least £40 million to Lille, and a successful World Cup might push up his asking price in the coming months.

David has a stellar track record for Canada, making 34 appearances since his debut in September 2018 and tallying 22 goals and 13 assists.

Prior to the start of the World Cup, Canada is scheduled to play two friendlies against Bahrain and Japan on November 11 and November 17, respectively.

On November 23, John Herdman’s team will play their opening game in Group F against Belgium, followed by matches against Croatia and Morocco on November 27 and December 1, respectively. As Cristiano Ronaldo gets ready to leave after his contract expires, it is anticipated that United would be looking for a new centre-forward in January.

Anthony Martial appeared to be on track to begin the season as the team’s top striker, but the Frenchman has had a number of injury issues this year.

For the Red Devils, Antony and Jadon Sancho have recently both been unavailable, giving head coach Erik ten Hag few options to choose from.
