According to the Metro, Sporting Lisbon star Goncalo Inacio is closely watched by English giants Manchester United. The defender has previously turned down a transfer to Newcastle United.
The 21-year-old is one of the top emerging centre-backs in European football. He recently outperformed Arsenal in the round of 16 of the Europa League.
Inacio is looking for a more significant challenge outside of Sporting and has passed up the chance to sign a new long-term contract. The young star has already turned down a move to Newcastle and would rather join a “big European team,” according to reports. He is currently being watched by the Red Devils.
Manager Erik ten Hag may want to make some changes during the summer as Martinez is the only left-footed central defender currently playing for United.
Luke Shaw has performed admirably in the left centre-back position, but Ten Hag would want another top player in that position. Inacio would be an ideal backup option for the Argentine. The 21-year-old has completed 90% of his passes so far this term.
He has also won four duels, completed more than two clearances, and averaged 29 passes in the opponent’s half per appearance.
Inacio recently demonstrated his skill set when playing against Arsenal. The Portuguese possess the skills to play for a team of United’s calibre. However, United might have to exercise the €45 million release clause in his contract in order to sign him this summer.
