Two goals from the spot by Marcus Rashford on the eve of his 22nd birthday victory sealed a victory for Manchester United and take them to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup where they were given a favorable draw and will face Colchester United on 17th December.
Rashford has now scored in back to back games after his strike in United’s 3-1 victory at Norwich at the weekend by putting United into the lead from the penalty spot after Marcos Alonso brought down Daniel James.
Chelsea who was playing with four teenagers in their lineup was poor in the first half and failed to get a single shot on target in what was a frustrating performance by their standards.
The blue came out all guns blazing in the second half and equalized through a Michy Batshuayi goal.
The goal came from a Willy Caballero long ball that ultimately served as the assist, Batshuayi with his first touch off his forehead, capitalized on some shaky positioning from Harry Maguire and raced past him before shooting from 20 yards to beat Sergio Romero and equalize.
Solskjaer then made a double change on 65 minutes – bringing on both Anthony Martial who was impressive against Norwich last Sunday and Andreas Pereira in place of Victor Lindelof and Jessie Lingard. Martial then had a chance to make an instant impact from a Dan James’s through ball but it was cut out by Kurt Zouma.
But It was Rashford who would restore the Reds’ lead with a stunning free-kick from forty yards out. Struck from a central position, the ball looked as if it moved twice in the air, leaving Chelsea’s keeper Caballero helpless.
Lampard tried to get an equalizer by bringing on arguably their two best players this season in Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham but the blue was not able to find a leveler
Manchester United will now travel to Bournemouth this Saturday while Chelsea welcomes Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
