According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United is leading the race to sign FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer. This season, the 23-year-old has been in excellent form for the Portuguese side.
The Red Devils will aim for a young, versatile ball-playing goalkeeper in the upcoming summer transfer window and Costa fits the bill perfectly.
During the 2022–23 season, the 23-year-old has been crucial to Sergio Conceicao’s squad. Costa has started every game for Porto and he has kept seven clean sheets in 13 outings across all leagues. During the previous season, the shot-stopper firmly established himself in the starting lineup.
The Portuguese has grown to be a significant component of the national team. During the most recent international break, the goalkeeper began matches in the UEFA Nations League against the Czech Republic and Spain. Many fans were impressed by Costa’s recent performance in the Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old helped Porto win 3-0 by saving a penalty and contributing an assist.
Due to his growing influence, United started keeping close tabs on the Benfica star as they aim to find a replacement for David de Gea. However, the Red Devils must activate the Portuguese star’s €60 million release clause in order to acquire him.
The Spanish goalkeeper is Erik ten Hag’s top choice this season but his performances have not been able to justify this decision.
Ten Hag wants a more ball-playing goalkeeper who can start counter-attack and come out of his position if needed. De Gea has been under scrutiny for lacking both of these skills and therefore, the club will seek options in the market.
But whether United will replace the 31-year-old with Costa in the future will be a major talking point.
