As reported by Portuguese news publication A Bola, Manchester United are leading the race to sign Porto star goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the upcoming transfer window.
There could be a potential change in the keeping spot for the Red Devils ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. While David de Gea is close to signing a new contract, manager Erik ten Hag recently stated that he cannot guarantee the Spaniard’s starting position.
The Portuguese outlet reports that United have now emerged as the frontrunner to secure the signing of Costa. The 23-year-old star is expected to make his final appearance for Porto on Sunday before trying to execute a move to the English Premier League.
Although English clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle United have also shown interest in acquiring his services, it appears that United are currently in a pole position to secure the signing of Costa.
De Gea’s recent performances have raised concerns about his form and reliability as United’s No. 1 goalkeeper.
Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove with 17 clean sheets, his mistakes against Sevilla, West Ham United, and Manchester City in the FA Cup final have highlighted his shortcomings.

During the FA Cup final at Wembley, De Gea was criticized for his lack of action as Ilkay Gundogan scored the opening goal for Man City, and he should have done better to prevent the second goal as well. These performances have led to calls for United to consider finding a new number one.
Costa is now seen as a potential replacement. The 23-year-old goalkeeper is known for his ball-playing abilities and his confidence in claiming high balls. Additionally, his distribution skills are considered more reliable than De Gea’s.

However, signing the Portuguese keeper will come at a high price, as he has a release clause of €75 million in his contract. Porto is likely to demand a fee close to that value to sell him.
