Former Manchester United defender Denis Irwin has admitted that French midfielder Paul Pogba is imperative to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the club needs to do all they can to keep hold of the 26-year-old.
United got off to a flying start to the new season when they dismantled fierce rivals Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day of the season and Pogba bagged himself two assists as well. But the Frenchman has looked far from his best over the next three games as United have drawn two and lost one with Pogba missing a penalty as well and was also heavily criticized by fans and pundits.
There were reports that Real Madrid was looking to sign the 26-year-old midfielder and it was no secret that Pogba wanted to play under Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu. But for now, Pogba is a Manchester United player and will remain so until the next transfer window at least.
But ex-United star Denis Irwin believes that there are very few players with the ability of Pogba that can create chances and unlock the tightest of defenses. Despite the fact that United finished in sixth place in the League table last term, Pogba netted 13 goals across all competitions and also registered nine assists from midfield.
The 53-year-old former Irish international Irwin said, “There are not too many players of Paul’s quality, He’s got plenty of players in front of him who has got great pace and I think he’s got the understanding of being able to pick a great pass. We need consistency out of him sometimes but going forward now and particularly where we’ve started dominating games he’s going to be a big, big player for us. I think every team needs a risk taker but I look at him and think he’s the one that can unlock doors. We’ve created enough chances to win games so he’s going to be vitally important for us.”
