Manchester United players charged by FA for surrounding the referee

As reported by The Athletic, the FA has charged Manchester United for failing to control their players and surrounding the referee against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ralf Rangnick’s team defeated the Seagulls by a 2-0 scoreline, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. Although tempers flared for Manchester United after an incident shortly after the first goal.

Under pressure, Brighton captain Lewis Dunk lost possession of the ball to Anthony Elanga just outside the penalty area. Dunk then took down the winger, resulting in a foul for which he was initially given a yellow card.

But then suddenly, the United players surged around the referee Peter Bankes, demanding that Dunk be sent out for the dreadful foul.

The FA Cup statement read:

“Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 following its Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion FC on Tuesday. It is alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 53rd minute, and the club has until Monday to provide a response.”

Dunk was given a straight red card after a VAR review, and Man United went on to score a second goal in injury time to seal the three points and return to the top four.

The FA appears to have found the United players’ reaction to being over-exaggerated, and as a result, the club has been charged with failing to control their players.
