Injury Update

Manchester United provide Anthony Martial injury update

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided an update on the injury suffered by Anthony Martial against Everton. In the first half of Sunday’s Premier League match against the Toffees, the French striker was substituted due to a back injury.

He was seen hobbling during warm-up practice but he was still allowed to play. The 26-year-old provided a beautiful assist for Antony as United levelled up the game. But in the 29th minute of the game, the number nine had to be replaced as he was struggling with an injury, and Cristiano Ronaldo, went on to score the game-winning goal at Goodison Park.

According to the gaffer, a fuller picture will likely become clear in the next 24 hours, although he is unaware of the severity of the problem at this time.

As reported by the club’s official website, Ten Hag said:

“I have to see. I cannot tell what it is or how serious it is. Let’s wait for the first 24 hours and see how serious it is, then I can give an answer. No, I don’t think so [it is a recurring issue]. It’s something different. He had a problem in his back.”

The former AS Monaco striker spent the final months of last season on loan at Sevilla, who later turned down the opportunity to sign him on a permanent basis this summer. However, the 26-year-old made an impression on Ten Hag during the preseason but he soon suffered a hamstring injury before the start of the season.

Prior to scoring twice off the bench against Man City on October 2, the striker missed the end of August and the first half of September due to an Achilles injury. Martial is now expected to miss more time due to injury.

As the Frenchman’s contract is set to end in June 2024, there is uncertainty regarding his long-term future at Old Trafford, however, Man United have the option of activating an additional 12 months in his contract.

Martial has played 273 times for the  Red Devils across all competitions and has contributed with 82 goals and 52 assists.
