According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have suffered a blow in their pursuit of signing Matheus Cunha, as Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently the front runners in this deal.
The Brazilian is viewed as an asset at the Spanish club, and Atletico Madrid wants to cash in on him to strengthen their financial status.
After recently losing in the European competition, Atletico Madrid is currently experiencing financial difficulties. A number of their players could leave the team, and it appears that Cunha might be one of them in January.
Since moving to Atletico Madrid, the 23-year-old Brazilian has struggled to find his best form, and for Diego Simeone, he has so far only been a squad player. He has only played 510 minutes of first-team football in 17 appearances, and in order to play frequently, he must leave the Spanish club.
The player will be eager to restart his career, and joining the Premier League would provide him with the chance to do so.
During the second half of the season, Manchester United could benefit from signing Cunha. Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with the Red Devils was recently terminated, so they will need to find a replacement.
Wolves are showing an interest in trying to secure a deal for Cunha at this point of the campaign. Wolves are in a position to offer Cunha consistent first-team action, but the report also states that competition for his services will be fierce.
It is uncertain whether Atletico will insist on a permanent or loan deal given that Cunha’s contract will expire in 2025.
