Manchester United have shifted their focus from Joshua Zirkzee to Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel, as reported by renowned journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Rasmus Hojlund currently holds the position of the Red Devils’ key striker and has been in impressive form, scoring six goals in his last seven appearances for the club.
Despite the Danish striker’s impressive form, manager Erik ten Hag is looking to bring in a new striker for competition at Old Trafford. Journalist Plettenberg recently revealed that United have been in touch with Tel’s representatives, signaling a shift in focus from Zirkzee.
Tel, who joined Bayern from Rennes last summer, had limited playing time in his debut season and has primarily featured as a center-forward in his appearances.
This season, he has played mainly on the left wing, accumulating 731 minutes from 27 outings. The interest in Zirkzee has reportedly diminished as attention turns towards Tel.
Mathys Tel’s future has been a major talking point in the past few weeks.
Speculation about the French star’s future has been a talking point due to his limited playing time, but it is not expected that the German giants will entertain the possibility of his departure when the transfer window reopens this summer.
The highly valued young talent, priced at €50 million, still has three years remaining on his €77,000-a-week contract. It is suggested that the recent rumors about his potential departure may be driven by his agent aiming to secure a new contract with an increased salary.
If Bayern were to consider selling the 18-year-old, it would likely demand a huge transfer fee. However, given Man United’s Financial Fair Play concerns, it seems unlikely they would invest heavily in a backup striker.
A similar financial constraint could apply to Joshua Zirkzee, who might carry a price tag of around €45-50 million. As an alternative, United may explore the option of pursuing Serhou Guirassy, who has a €17.5 million release clause in his Stuttgart contract.
Despite United’s previous interest being hindered by FFP issues, the club is expected to revisit their pursuit at the end of the season.
