Manchester United star Diogo Dalot deserves a new long-term contract

With his best-ever performance for Portugal, Diogo Dalot continues to attract attention with his strong performances for both club and country.

The right-back scored twice in a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic, and he scored a brace for the first time for his national side. The game highlighted Dalot’s recent improvement in play, where he has established himself as a mainstay for Manchester United.

He wasn’t in such good shape a year ago when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge, as he was clearly Aaron Wan Bissaka’s backup player.

There were concerns over Dalot’s future at Old Trafford a year ago. Regardless of whether United signed additional competition at right-back, he has now earned the right to be viewed as a crucial player for the future.

Dalot was signed in 2018 for a cost of £19 million and his contract will end next summer. As per Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils may choose to extend his contract for a further 12 months and then plan for a long-term deal.

The 23-year-old has been a part of the United defence that has won the last four Premier League games and has secured three clean sheets in the process. His success for Portugal demonstrates the talent United now has, hence he cannot be permitted to leave the club on a free transfer.

In the coming months, Dalot’s new contract must rise to the top of Old Trafford’s priority list along with Marcus Rashford’s contract decision.

The right-back seems happy at United, has never complained about missing games, and lets his play speak for itself on the field. With a vast future ahead, he would probably accept a new contract offer right away.

It would have been debatable whether Dalot deserved an extension a year ago but he has now shown why he needs a fresh contract. The Manchester United board now has an important decision to make.
