Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has revealed that his move to West Ham United did not come to fruition mainly due to financial issues.
The Red Devils had agreed to a £30 million transfer deal with the Hammers for the English star during the summer. However, the move fell through.
The 30-year-old was willing to take a lower salary to join West Ham, but he expected United to provide him with a compensation package in return.
Ultimately, the transfer did not go ahead. Man United opted to retain Maguire, while West Ham chose to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos instead.
In an interview with Express, the former captain suggested that the deal failed due to disagreements over the payment terms.
“How can I put this? We just didn’t come to an agreement. They were happy for me to stay and I was happy to fight for my place. I want to do that and every time I train or play I will give everything.”
Despite his limited playing time at the beginning of the season, Maguire expressed confidence in getting more opportunities on the field.
The former Leicester City star has faced challenges at the start of the season, having played just 23 minutes of regular game time. This occurred during the defeat to Arsenal when he came on as a substitute for Lisandro Martinez.
Notably, Martinez did not feature in any games for Argentina during their recent World Cup qualifiers. More information about his fitness is expected to be revealed during Ten Hag’s upcoming press conference.
In the event that the World Cup-winning player is not completely fit, Maguire might team up with Victor Lindelof in the central defence for the match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
Raphael Varane is still recovering from an injury and is likely to be sidelined for a few more weeks before he can return to first-team play.
