Manchester United surprisingly interested in Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (Page 21), Manchester United has surprisingly emerged as a potential suitor for Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario this summer.

While David de Gea is currently the undisputed starter for the Red Devils, manager Erik ten Hag recently stated that he cannot guarantee de Gea’s position in the future and believes in having competition for places.

As a result, United is reportedly considering signing Vicario to provide that competition.

Apart from United, Napoli and Inter Milan are also said to be monitoring the 26-year-old goalkeeper in case Andre Onana or Alex Meret leave their respective clubs during the summer transfer window.

Vicario has had an excellent second season at Empoli, making close to three saves per game and playing a crucial role in keeping the team away from relegation.

In addition to his shot-stopping abilities, Vicario has been impressed with his ability to come off his line and claim high balls due to his strong aerial presence.

Vicario has not only been impressed with his shot-stopping abilities but also with his distribution skills. He has maintained an average of 25 accurate passes and six long balls per game.

The 26-year-old’s performance has caught the attention of United, who are considering entering the bidding battle for his services in the upcoming transfer window.

Despite David de Gea being on the verge of signing a new long-term deal, there is a belief that United should pursue another young goalkeeper to provide strong competition.

The Spaniard has made four errors this season and has been prone to giving away possession. Ten Hag has continued to trust him without a quality backup option.

However, the situation should change ahead of the next season. The arrival of Vicario at Old Trafford could create healthy competition for De Gea, keeping him on his toes and potentially leading to his replacement if he continues to make mistakes.
