According to the German publication Sport Bild, Manchester United is interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp this summer, and have already made an offer worth £178k per week for the 32-year-old.
Over the years, David de Gea has excelled for the Red Devils. However, he needs competition from a reliable deputy because of the mistakes he made earlier this season.
There is a school of opinion that Manchester United would be better off with a ball-playing goalkeeper to fit Erik ten Hag’s system because the Spaniard has always struggled with the ball at his feet.
The only other senior goalie available in the squad is Tom Heaton because Manchester United allowed Dean Henderson to go on loan to Nottingham Forest. Yann Sommer, a Swiss goalkeeper for Borussia Monchengladbach, is a candidate to fill the position. But in a World Cup year, the No. 1 player for Switzerland might not be pleased with a bench position.
With that in mind, numerous candidates, such as Tim Krul of Norwich City and Daniel Bachmann of Watford, are surfacing. However, the Red Devils have made a formal offer to Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
Trapp would bring a wealth of experience to the team. He competed at the greatest level with Paris Saint-Germain before returning to his native country in 2018 after finding it difficult to maintain consistency there.
Since returning to the Bundesliga in 2018, the 32-year-old has been Frankfurt’s regular player for five seasons. He has six caps for the German national team as well.
Last season, Trapp played in all but two of the Eagles’ Bundesliga contests. Despite Frankfurt finishing 11th overall, the 32-year-old gave them a chance to advance by winning the Europa League. He was crucial to his team’s success in the Europa League, and his performance against the Rangers was outstanding.
With a long-term offer from Manchester United on the table, the German international, who still has two years left on his contract with Frankfurt, must now decide on his future.
Because of his skill with the ball, he would be a capable goalkeeper who could push de Gea for the starting position and would fit ten Hag’s style of play.
