Arsenal faced Manchester United at Old Trafford in a mid-week game. A beautifully teed up game at Old Trafford promised to be a goal rush when high-in confidence Arsenal faced the Red Devils, waiting for results. Although Arsenals may have been the visitors, they were the favorites to win.
Manchester United began the game home fans had been crying out for months, attacking and dominating. But who would have thought that Arsenal would be the first team to score, more so a goal conceded by great De Gea?
Whilst the first goal came off a header from Mustafi that was a routine collect for De Gea but the ball eventually bounced off De Gea’s gloves into and over his head. Although the ball was cleared off Herrera, the Spaniard was an inch inside the posts to be given a goal.
Nevertheless, it took only 4 minutes for United to level the scoring courtesy a goal from birthday boy, United’s top-scorer, Anthony Martial. Another set-piece goal for United, another assist for Herrera.
A captivating, absorbing half, promised a gripping contest to come in the second half. The teams went in with 1-1 scoresheet, expecting a lead when they would come back. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, previous Red Devil came off the bench for Arsenal in for Ramsey.
The second half began with an equal swing of balances, both the teams hungry to score. The Gunners were better of the two and scored their second after an erroneous display of defense from Marcos Rojo, giving away the ball and later putting it in his own net. Again, Arsenal were on the lead but not for long.
In the blink of an eye, United bounced back scoring as soon as they restarted the game. It was Lingard who tucked the ball in through the legs of Leno courtesy of misunderstanding among Arsenal’s defence.
A game full of tempo from the start, could not have had a better result. Points apiece shared at Old Trafford, and United are still unbeaten at the Theatre of Dreams against arsenal, since 2006.
