The 188th competitive Manchester derby will take place at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, with Manchester City looking to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to just two points before the Gunners face their own derby against Tottenham on Sunday.
No team has defeated Manchester United more often in the Premier League at Old Trafford than Man City (eight wins), and a victory in this game will see Pep Guardiola’s side defeat United for a record 19th time in the competition since it began in 1992, surpassing both Chelsea and Liverpool’s records of 18 wins versus the Red Devils.
Man United’s recent head-to-head record against City has been dismal, with three consecutive Premier League defeats in which they’ve conceded 12 goals in total – the same number of goals conceded in their previous 12 meetings with City combined. If they lose this game, it will be the first time they have lost four consecutive Premier League Manchester derbies since November 2014.
Erik ten Hag is attempting to avoid becoming the first Manchester United manager since David Moyes in 2013-14 to lose his first two matches against Manchester City, but his opponent Pep Guardiola has never defeated a Manchester United manager twice in the same league season – both of his previous league doubles came against two different United coaches: José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick for Manchester City for the third time in three Premier League home matches, becoming the first player in the competition to do so for any club. Haaland wasn’t the only player to score three goals in this derby, as City’s Phil Foden also contributed three goals in the 6-3 victory. These two hat-tricks brought the total number of Man City trebles against Manchester United to two, with Francis Lee scoring one in December 1970 and Horace Barnes scoring one in October 1921.
With six goals in their previous Premier League match against United, City could potentially break some records with three more in this match. If they score at least three goals against Manchester United in a single season (currently eight in 1954-55 – 3-2 at home, 5-0 away), they will break their own club record of most league goals scored against the Red Devils in a single season (currently eight in 1954-55 – 3-2 at home, 5-0 away), and they will also equal the Premier League record of most goals scored against the Red Devils (nine), set by Liverpool in 2021-22.
Anthony Martial scored twice for Manchester United after coming off the bench as a substitute. In total, he has five Premier League goals against Man City.Manchester United comes into this derby in excellent form. No team in the Premier League has won more points than Manchester United since their victory over Liverpool on August 22. (35). They have won 11 of their 15 games in this time (D2 L2), whichh is a significant improvement considering they had lost their previous four league games.
United are on an eight-match winning streak in all competitions, their longest since January 2019 in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first eight games in charge (as caretaker, at that time). They haven’t won nine games in a row since José Mourinho took over in January 2017. Erik ten Hag’s team has kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets. The Red Devils haven’t kept four clean sheets in a row since March 2021, but they did keep four clean sheets and win every game in August 2017.
Ten Hag is on his second four-game winning streak as Manchester United manager, having done so earlier this season between August and September. As Manchester United manager, Ralf Rangnick never managed a four-game winning streak in league competition, with their last winning streak as long as this coming in April 2021 (five in a row) under Solskjaer.
