The result at Turf Moor meant that United dropped down to fifth in the league standings behind West Ham United who occupy the fourth and final berth to make it to the Champions League.
With the North London duo Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur mounting a challenge to secure a top-four finish, an embattled Manchester United side would be backed to get their affairs in order sooner rather than later.
Southampton, meanwhile, secured a memorable win in their last outing which came away at Spurs with the Saints posting a 3-2 scoreline to claim the three points against Antonio Conte’s men.
