Manchester United youngster Ondrej Mastny seals loan move to Portadown

As reported by the club’s official website, Manchester United goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny has secured his loan move to Portadown.

As per the report, the 20-year-old has been sent on loan to the struggling NIFL Premiership team for the rest of the year. The goalkeeper will be motivated to gain some regular minutes under his belt because it’s his first temporary loan stint of his career.

Mastny had moved to United from Czech club Vysocina Jihlava back in July 2018. He has recently played for the Reds’ Under-18 and Under-21 teams.

Last season, he played eight times for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and just once for the Under-18s in the Uefa Youth Cup. However, the youngster has struggled to get consistent opportunities this year, making only one appearance for the Under-21s. He has frequently been listed as a substitute in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Mastny has worked with the first-team squad on matchdays, previously taking part in warm-ups, despite not yet making his United debut. The goalkeeper has already played for the Czech Republic at the Under-20 level.

He was a member of the travelling squad for the first time when United played Wolves in Molineux in the third round of the FA Cup way back in January 2020.

The Czech goalie, who will turn 21 in March, is the second recent United goalkeeper to move to Shamrock Park from Old Trafford. Jacob Carney, a former Reds goalie who is currently at Sunderland, was loaned to Portadown in January 2021.

During his stay in Ireland, Carney established himself as a fan favourite and was a hugely popular figure. He made 26 appearances while recording three clean sheets.
