Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood gets voted August’s Player of the Month

On 4th September 2021, with three goals in three consecutive matches to his name, scoring, namely, against Leeds United, Southhampton and Wolves, Mason Greenwood was voted Manchester United’s August Player of the Month.

Rewind to fifteen years back when he joined Manchester United’s development school in Halifax, England, at the tender age of six. Looking back at his career, Greenwood is no stranger to be acclaimed as one of the finest football icons of his generation. With the Under-18 Man United squad, he finished as top scorer, with 17 goals in 21 matches, of the U-18 Premier League North. He was also named Player of the Tournament as the youth team won the ICGT Trophy in the Netherlands, having deafeated the Spanish giants, Real Madrid, in the final.

On 2nd October 2018, 17-year-old Mason Greenwood signed his professional contract with The Red Devils.

The 19-year-old has become the second teenager in the Premier League to score three goals in three consecutive matches after Robbie Fowler, a Liverpool legend and also the current manager of SC East Bengal in the Indian Super League.

Greenwood has been praised for his impressive style of play by his coaches, both past and present. In 2019, former Man United academy coach, Mark Senior, “People say he’s like the new Robin Van Persie but I don’t know. I think he’s his own man. I’ve not seen another player like him. His style means his pace is deceptive because he is absolutely rapid.”

During an interview after a friendly match against Burnley, Greenwood admitted that hoped he would break Old Trafford legend, Wayne Rooney’s record of 15 Premier League goals. And thus, his wishes were fulfilled when The Red Devils faced Aston Villa on 9th May at Villa Park, where he netted a goal in 56th-minute backing teammate Bruno Fernandes’ penalty with Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani settling the game by heading the ball into the net at the 87th minute.

As of now, the English man has the record of scoring most goals as a teenager in the Premier League in his hands and there are hints of him setting a high benchmark for the coming generation. And we are all willing witnesses to watch him flourish.
