Manchester United’s 2023/24 season was almost a nightmare but a remarkable FA Cup final victory against Manchester City at Wembley gave some good moments and an achievement to treasure. Despite this high point, significant issues persist throughout the club.
The only other major positive was Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake, potentially pointing to significant changes in the next season.
Premier League Disappointment
After doing well last season and coming in third, many thought United would stay among the top four. But, they had their worst season in the Premier League since it started in 1992, landing in eighth place.
This was even lower than when David Moyes was in charge and they finished seventh. The season kicked off badly with three losses in the first five games, and things didn’t get better. They ended up with a record 14 league losses and a goal difference of minus one.
Champions League Failure
United’s return to the Champions League was a disaster. Despite being in a relatively easy group, they finished last behind Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Galatasaray. The campaign was marred by chaotic matches, such as the losses to Copenhagen (from 2-0 up to 4-3 down) and Galatasaray (losing 3-2 despite leading twice).
Rasmus Højlund’s five goals were a bright spot, but they couldn’t prevent United from crashing out in the group stage.

FA Cup Triumph
A last-minute goal by Casemiro got a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, making for a thrilling quarter-final against Liverpool, which United took 4-3 after extra time.
In the semi-final against Coventry, United almost lost a 3-0 lead, but clinched victory in a penalty shoot-out. In the final, two goals from teenagers secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, marking the season’s high point.
League Cup Exit
United’s Cup hold ended in round four with Newcastle, the team they beat to win last year. After a bright 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, a 3-0 loss to Newcastle dashed hopes, adding to a tough winter.
Standout Performers
Bruno Fernandes was named Player of the Season, thanks to his 15 goals and 11 assists. His consistent performance was a rare positive in a difficult season. Rasmus Højlund, the top scorer with 16 goals, had a slow start but finished strongly, showing promise for the future.
Rising star Kobbie Mainoo also made significant strides, scoring crucial goals and earning a call-up to the England squad.

Looking Ahead
The summer marks a new era for Manchester United with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS taking charge. Omar Berrada will join as the new CEO, Jason Wilcox is in place as technical director, and Dan Ashworth is expected to follow.
Major changes are anticipated, including potential managerial shifts and squad overhauls. Fans hope this reset will finally lead to the revival of the Red Devils.
