Marcus Rashford shatters unique record after scoring against Manchester City

As reported by the club’s official website, Marcus Rashford scored the game-winning goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 derby day victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday, making him the first player since Dennis Viollet in 1959 to score in nine straight home games for the Reds.

With only eight minutes remaining, Rashford changed the course of the match after being at the centre of the controversial Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser four minutes earlier. He connected with Alejandro Garnacho’s low cross and scored the goal from close range. It was his 16th and most significant goal thus far in the campaign.

Eight goals have been scored by the academy graduate in seven games since the domestic season restarted after the World Cup. Additionally, he has eight goals this season in the Premier League, half of which have come in his previous four contests.

The 25-year-old not only increased his total tally against City but also tied Violett’s long-standing mark of scoring in nine straight home games. Rashford’s streak started in late October, when he scored the Reds’ second goal in a 3-0 Europa League victory over Sheriff Tiraspol.

Since then, he has scored in the Premier League matches against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and City. He has also scored in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup matches against Aston Villa, Burnley, Charlton Athletic, and Everton.
