Premier League club Manchester United have confirmed that defender Marcos Rojo has joined Argentinean side Estudiantes on a loan deal until the remainder of the campaign.
Rojo’s future has come under major speculation for quite some time now as Merseyside club Everton attempted to take him to Goodison Park on Transfer Deadline Day earlier in the summer market, but a move failed to materialize for the 28-year-old.
The Argentine has fallen further down the pecking order at Manchester United in recent times, but injury problems in the backline rendered Rojo as a useful back-up option for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this term. However, the return to fitness for Ivorian defender Eric Bailly means that his chances at the club would come few and far between once again.
Rojo will return to his hometown for the second half of the 2019/20 season as the central defender joined Estudiantes La Plata as a ten-year-old and rose through the ranks to break into the first team back in 2009, playing mostly as a left-back with a lot of desire to attack. After brief stints with Russian giants Spartak Moscow and Portuguese outfit Sporting CP, Rojo joined the red side of Manchester in the summer of 2014. Since then, he has made 122 appearances for the Red Devils and has scored two goals as well.
But this term, Rojo has appeared only nine times for United and mostly in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup. In the Premier League, the Argentine had just one start along with two substitute appearances. With Bailly’s return, Solskjaer already has four central defenders in the team at his disposal, while Axel Tuanzebe, who is recovering, will also be an option when he returns from injury.
Regular football will help Rojo get back into the Argentina national team and possibly a candidate to partner Harry Maguire at the start of the next season if he improves tremendously.
