Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has shed light on his relationship with former Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho, confirming reports that the pair didn’t enjoy the best of times in their two and a half year spell together at the Theatre Of Dreams.
The 57-year-old Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United back in December 2018 after failing to turn around a series of underwhelming results and poor performances and the ‘Special One’ was then replaced by Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer midway through the campaign. The Portuguese manager developed a reputation for pulling no punches in front of the media, and he did not hesitate to throw his players under the bus when called upon.
While speaking to news reporters, French striker Martial has lifted the lid on his relationship with the three-time Premier League champion adding that Mourinho never told things directly to the players and instead did so in front of the media putting the players at fault.
The 24-year-old Martial revealed that he wanted to prove Mourinho wrong and after doing so on the pitch, his manager would explain his desires, “It’s true that I’d have preferred it if he’d told me directly, there’s no need to say it in front of everybody. After that, you definitely want to prove him wrong. He didn’t start me during the first few games and each time I came on, I scored. In the end, he told me: ‘You see, now you understand what I wanted”
Martial has gotten back into the frame under current United manager Solskjaer and managed to crawl his way back into the starting eleven as a regular but the French attacker was never really trusted by his former manager Mourinho and the pair had a rocky relationship at Old Trafford.
