Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that young midfielder Scott McTominay has become a leader at the club after impressive performances over the recent past.
In a rather difficult opening three months of the new season, where United have managed only three Premier League wins, McTominay’s form has been one of United’s major bright spots for the fallen English giants.
The 22-year-old midfielder produced another standout display in the 2-1 EFL Cup success at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Wednesday to help United to a third away win in succession, with Solskjaer’s outfit having shown signs of recovery ever since their impressive 1-1 draw with league leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Some United supporters have already begun to discuss the prospect of a future captaincy and McTominay is a serious candidate despite his tender age. McTominay was brought into the first team by Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho and he has shown great maturity over the past few months by becoming the anchor as well as the creative playmaker for United.
Norwegian boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been pleased with McTominay’s growth and stature off late and the 46-year-old explained that the Scottish star is forming a great partnership with the other midfielders, “He’s been excellent. He and Fred, they’re working a good relationship, they have played well together. They did that last season: Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, there were quite a few games where they played together when we had some injuries. Now they’re working as a pair.
Solskjaer also went on to add that McTominay is a leader and can still develop his game to another level, “But Scotty has been excellent. He’s a leader, he’s a Man United boy, he’s come through the ranks – you can see he’s been a striker with the goal he scored against Norwich [City], on the half-turn – but he’s developing into a very good midfielder.”
