Michael Carrick reveals game plan against Villarreal

Our new interim manager Michael Carrick has revealed that Manchester United will likely see few changes in playing style on Tuesday night.

Following the dismissal of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday, Carrick has taken charge at Old Trafford. Carrick was Solskjaer’s assistant and will serve as a temporary replacement until a permanent successor is signed.

One of his first responsibilities will be to lead United in their Champions League match against Villarreal on Tuesday night at Estadio de la Ceramica.

The two teams are tied on points at the top of the table, and a win for United would put them through, while a win for Villarreal would almost certainly send them through with a one-goal win, and a win of two goals or more would send them solidly through.

Villarreal may face a difficult task as a result of Solskjaer’s departure, as they haven’t had time to examine what Carrick might do with his club. However, the new United manager has conceded that there will be little change because he shares Solskjaer’s principles.

As reported by the club via Twitter, Michael Carrick said:

“We will have to wait and see. I’ve worked closely with Ole for a long time and we have similar beliefs. I have my own personality, but of course, it’s very similar because that’s why we worked together for so long and worked well together. I’m clear in my own mind how we want to play and what we want to do. I’m looking forward to seeing that on the pitch.”

With a win, United will be able to advance, while Villarreal will be able to complete qualifying on Tuesday night.

With four prior draws, a Villarreal triumph in last season’s Europa League final, and a Manchester United win in the group stage match between these two sides in October, the past few matches have been evenly split.
