Murphy: United could sack Solksjaer if they fail to lift any trophy

Manchester United could sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Red Devils supervisor should he neglect to lift the Europa League prize this season.

That is as per Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy, who accepts that a Premier League top-four completion wouldn’t save the 48-year-old Norwegian.

Manchester United endured a significant hit to their trophy aspirations on Sunday after they were unloaded out of the FA Cup in a 3-1 loss to Leicester City. The Red Devils’ expectation of finishing the season with a piece of silverware presently lies in the Europa League as Manchester City holds a lead in the Premier League title race.

Manchester United saw off an extreme test from AC Milan in the round of 16 a week ago to punch their pass to the quarter-finals. Solskjaer’s men will play Granada in the Europa League competition, however, teams like Arsenal, Ajax, and Roma are also in line for the Europa League title.

Murphy has recommended that United must be “improving” and they could “roll out an improvement” in the event that they don’t win this current season’s Europa League.

Murphy said while talking to talkSport: “They can’t be blaming tiredness for a loss at Leicester in the FA Cup and their squad not being strong enough. United competing in the Europa League is not good enough, first and foremost, the fans know that the club knows that and Ole knows that. Not progressing in the Champions League was a massive, massive blow for them. Yes, they’re going to get in the top four… but so they damn should! He’s in a position for me where the Europa League, for me, has become monumental for him and the club. I like him and I’m not one who wants to see managers sacked and I do think they’ve made some strides forward, but Manchester United has to be doing better. If they don’t win the Europa League and only finish in the top four, then I think they’ll make a change.”

Manchester United will go to the Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes on 8th April for the principal leg quarter-finals conflict with Granada. The return leg will be facilitated at Old Trafford on 15th April.
