According to the Manchester Evening News, Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Manchester United target Memphis Depay this season.
The Red Devils have cooled their interest in the Dutch striker, and the Magpies have taken advantage of this situation. Newcastle have surpassed Juventus and United in the race to sign the 28-year-old.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding his future at Barcelona, Depay was a summer transfer target for Premier League clubs.
The former United striker was on Newcastle’s radar before they paid a club-record sum to sign Alexander Isak.
The world-class attacker has played in just two La Liga games this year. Xavi eventually gave him a chance against Cadiz after having him sit out the first four games of the season.
A week later, he scored his first goal of the year against Elche. Depay will represent the Netherlands in the World Cup, but he will soon start looking for a route out of the club.
Although his current deal expires in the summer, Barcelona would probably be content to release him six months early if they could get their asking price.
The race for Depay is presently being led by Newcastle, but a lot may change before the market opens in January.
