Premier League giants Manchester United have officially completed the signing for English center-back Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a record-breaking deal making him the most expensive defender in history.
The Red Devils have made a big splash this summer transfer window as they already recruited Daniel James and Aaron Wan Bissaka but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quite clear that he wanted a big central defender who can stabilize his leaky defense.
United was linked with luring a number of top quality defenders in the European continent to Old Trafford but nothing ever really materialized over the course of the summer. However, a deal for Maguire was in the process for quite a while over the past few weeks as Leicester were holing out for a better transfer fee from United for the 26-year-old defender.
This long-running saga has finally come to an end on Monday when Manchester United announced the signing of Maguire in a record-breaking deal worth £80 million surpassing the previous most expensive deal for Virgil Van Dijk when the Dutchman signed for Liverpool from Southampton.
After signing his six-year contract with United, Maguire expressed his delight and gratitude towards the Foxes, “I am delighted to have signed for this great club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons. However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity. From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It’s clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started.”
