Premier League giants Manchester United have confirmed that Matteo Darmian has completed a move to Serie A club Parma earlier today ahead of the close of the European transfer window.
The Red Devils signed Matteo Darmian back in the summer of 2015 from Italian club Torino in a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £12 million. The Italian defender had a rather bright start to his Manchester United career, winning the club’s best player award in his first month with the Red Devils but the decline following the initial stages was not something that the United faithful were expecting.
Eventually, Darmian lost his place in the starting lineup, falling behind his teammates Antonio Valencia and Ashely Young in the pecking order in the full-back position. To accentuate the misery, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s respective arrivals over the two summer transfer windows pushed Darmian into an exile from the first-team and there was no scope for a revival at Old Trafford.
But Darmian did play an integral role for United over the past few seasons helping them win the FA Cup as well as the Europa League. However, in a bid to resurrect his career, Darmian sought a move back to his native in Italy.
The 29-year-old’s wish to leave Manchester United after playing under three different managers was granted as the Red Devils agreed on a permanent deal with Serie A side Parma worth in the region of €1.5 million.
The 20-time English champions released a statement which provided the details, “Manchester United can confirm that defender Matteo Darmian has signed for Italian side Parma. The full-back joined the Reds from Torino in 2015 and went on to make 92 appearances for the club. In four years with us, Matteo scored one goal – a sublime volley against Crystal Palace in 2016, in a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford. Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Matteo for his service and wish him all the best for the future.”
