Paul Parker has revealed what Lisandro Martinez said to Harry Maguire during Sunday’s FA Cup victory over Fulham.
Last night, England won their match against Italy in Euro 2024 qualification round and Maguire was rock solid in defence.
Parker claims that Martinez, who played alongside the United captain in the 3-1 quarterfinal win over Fulham, was “obviously telling him” something.
Parker has claimed that Martinez was seen shouting orders at Maguire in order to help him against Fulham. The English star is playing irregularly and the former Ajax centre-back was clearly helping Maguire in building his confidence.
As reported by the Metro, Parker revealed what Martinez said to Maguire during the match. He said:
“He hasn’t played regularly for a long time now and he is struggling defensively every time he gets the opportunity to play. Martinez was clearly telling him in the previous game that he was defending too deep and I don’t get how he can’t understand how Erik ten Hag wants to play.”
Maguire has mostly played off the bench for United this season, with manager Erik ten Hag favouring Martinez and French international Raphael Varane in defence.
In the 2022–23 campaign, Maguire has made a total of 24 appearances for United. Southgate praised the 30-year-old by calling him “one of our greatest players” at the World Cup held in Qatar.
Maguire did justify his inclusion in the starting XI against Italy last night, as he played with confidence at the back. Although, the player continues to shine for his country, his future at the club looks distorted.
He may be allowed to leave this summer and the Red Devils would need a replacement if in case Maguire decides to leave.
