Paul Scholes believes Wout Weghorst doesn’t have the quality required to play for the Red Devils following Manchester United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.
The Dutch international has only scored one goal in 14 games after joining United on loan during the January transfer window.
Weghorst started in the No. 10 position against Liverpool but found it difficult to have an impact. The striker was ultimately replaced in the 58th minute.
Despite Weghorst’s reputation among his United teammates for his hard work ethic, Scholes thinks the 30-year-old is not at the necessary level to be a long-term solution under Erik ten Hag.
As reported by the Metro, the former United midfielder said:
“Weghorst is in the team to be a defender, really. You’re talking about a Manchester United No.10 or a centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive.”
“He’s the one who runs about and rats about and everybody likes playing with him because he does that. But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United… it’s not there.”
Weghorst was completely ineffective against Liverpool and he didn’t justify his role as a No.10 United and failed to create any chances in the second half even if they were the better side in the first half.
Ten Hag’s side was looking completely off at the back line after the break. Weghorst had a huge impact in the Carabao Cup final win against Newcastle but yesterday’s performance has not put the standards to play for a big club.
The striker will need to show his worth in the upcoming matches if he wants to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
